SOUTHEAST ASIA: Penang

Overview

Penang is the oldest British settlement in Malaysia, and, not surprisingly, one of the country's most popular tourist attractions. The city of Penang is divided into two sections: Sebarang Prai on the mainland, and Penang Island. Undoubtedly, you will spend the majority of your time on Penang Island, a 285-square kilometer vacation paradise that is home to just over half a million people.

The island has been continuously inhabited since the 15th century. Towards the end of the 18th century, Penang became a major stop on British East Indian trade routes, and the capital city of Georgetown was founded in 1786. Penang continued to play an important role in world trade through the years. During World War II, the island was continuously bombed, and many of its historic sights were reduced to rubble. In the nearly 60 years following the war, Penang has rebuilt itself into the cultural and commercial center it is today, one that caters to every need of the modern tourist.

Don't let its small size fool you; Penang is home to beautiful resorts, spectacular beaches, terrific dining, world class shopping, and natural and scenic wonders galore. The riches of Penang clearly cannot be unearthed in a day's time, but plan your day carefully, and you will certainly have a wonderful time exploring this fascinating Malaysian island.
